In my search for a research paper topic, I've come up with two! Which would you be more interested in learning about?
1. The effect of mass media (especially Hollywood movies) on traffic violations in the United States. All those car chases must have some effect...
2. The effect of mass media (probably more television) on college students getting enough sleep to meet the hours suggested by medical professionals. I learned the required amount is eight-and-a-half to nine hours of sleep. All students who are getting that much, say 'aye!' -silence-
I think both are fascinating topics! Any takers?
Well, the sleeping one as is seems less like a research topic and more of an observation. Where are you going to take it. You can't just say "we watch too much TV". You could make the argument that the TV business shows the most interesting shows at night. I think this topic may have a shaky grounding, though. Maybe focus on a couple big car chase movies.
ReplyDeleteThe traffic violations one is interesting. The only problem I see is research. You need statistics, at least, to show the accident/car chase rates went up as movies came out. I just don't know if you can find scholarly journals on that one, though I think the argument is more sound. It's also interesting. If that doesn't work, you could shift to focus on general police tactics. Movies that show the police systems must have changed the systems somehow...If you can find the research, I think the traffic violations one is interesting.
There is research out there about sleep deprivation and the consequences of it. College students seem to be the worst at getting enough sleep. I know I've heard it is detrimental to have a TV in your bedroom---maybe start there.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll do a paper about whether or not it is good for law enforcement to carry out high-speed chases. There is a lot of controversy about that.
